Why Iron Supplements May Be Necessary

By Samantha S. Brownee

Iron has several uses and jobs in the human body which is why if a person has a low iron level they may need to take an iron supplement. The primary role of iron in the body is to assist in the job of the red blood cells. Red blood cells contain hemoglobin which has the job of carrying oxygen and moving it to all parts of the body. It is imperative to get the proper amount of iron because too much can be toxic but not enough can also cause problems like anemia. Supplements can be taken if a person is not receiving enough iron from their everyday meals.

Being certain that you are eating a well-rounded diet is the best way to ensure that you are getting the right amount of iron. Red meats, poultry, and fish are the best sources for heme iron. Nonheme iron is found in various plant sources. Some types include oatmeal, soybeans, tofu, and lentils.

If a person's diet is lacking in iron-rich food sources then this can lead to Iron Deficiency Anemia. This can often be remedied easily by changing the diet or including a supplement if necessary. The symptoms of this are often present as extreme fatigue due to the lack of oxygen. Affected people may also exhibit symptoms of decreased immune function or difficulty regulating their body temperature.

Apart from diet, certain medications, extreme blood loss, and other illnesses can reduce the levels of iron in the body. There are many people who are more susceptible to developing anemia over others. Among this group, those at an increased are premature babies, infants and toddlers, girls in their teens, women who are of childbearing age, and those who have problems with their kidneys or digestion.

Pregnant women frequently suffer from lower levels of iron in the blood. When a woman becomes pregnant, the volume of blood in her body significantly increases which results in the need for extra iron. Almost all prenatal vitamins that are obtainable will have a higher amount of iron to make up for this.

Many people get the proper amount of iron from the foods that they eat, but others may need to take a supplement to make up for an insufficiency. It is always important to review your body's needs with a doctor before taking a supplement since too much iron can make you very sick and even be fatal.
