Treats: Helpful Tool For Various Rottweiler Training Commands

By David Lamb

Training your dog will make everyday living a lot easier for you and your beloved pet. This article gives you several tips that can be used when learning effective Rottweiler training. Have fun when doing this with your dog and in time you will see wonderful effects.

One training strategy is to give your pet a treat as an incentive for great performance. Here are some tips on the best way to use treat when teaching numerous obedience commands:

- To teach your dog to sit, have him in a standing position and hold a treat in the air. Pass the treat directly over his head, therefore moving your hand behind him. This will lead him to look up as he attempts to follow your hand. When a dog does this, it's normal for him to sit. When he's about to sit, say the command "sit" and as soon as his butt reaches the ground, praise and reward him with the treat you are holding.

- When training your pet to stay, take baby steps. First tell him to sit or lie down. When he has held that position for a couple of seconds, tell him to stay. If he stays longer, give him a treat. Release him and do the process again, rewarding him after he stays a bit longer with every repetition.

- Part of Rottweiler training is to teach your pet to come to you when called. To do this, a long rope is a great aid. Call the puppy while gently pulling him to you and praising him for coming. Once he reaches you, praise him a lot more and offer a favorite treat. Shortly, the puppy will associate his name and coming to you with praise and treats, then you won't need the rope anymore.

- To keep your pet from barking, teach him to obey an easy order that will make him quiet. When your pet barks, show him a treat and repeat the command, for example 'be quiet' until he stops barking. Hold out for a few seconds and then give him the treat. If you repeat this long enough, your dog will connect the treat and then the command with the behavior which is to keep quiet.

- When housebreaking your pet dog it is quite essential for him to learn that when he went potty outside, you will be proud of him. Give him a treat and some attention the moment he has done his business. Do not just let him go about his business while you go about yours.

It's best to start Rottweiler training by giving him a treat every time he does what you would like him to. After he gets the hang of it, decrease the treats and only give him a treat 75% of the time while increasing other forms of reward such as praise and playtime. Continue minimizing treats until he only gets one at times.
