Room Painting Tasks That Can Be Done Yourself

By Philip Smith

It's not as simple as it looks, but one project that pretty much anyone can do on their house is painting. Depending on the length of time you have lived in your house, and how long it has been since it was painted, you'll know how difficult the job will be. If you complete adequate prep work and you make the time, you will be able to save some money doing it yourself. In case you lack the time, but you have the money, you can hire someone to get it done.

Paint doesn't last forever, and eventually it starts to peel and look horrible. The one immediate solution is to have a paint scraper and scrape off the peeling paint. For those who have a well used home, chances are that you have layers of old paint underneath your current one. This is a much harder job when the previous paint was an oil-based paint. After you're done scraping the paint off the walls, you are going to either need to putty holes in the wall if it's wood or spackle if it is drywall then sand it down. If you're done, then simply remove the dust and give it the chance to completely dry. You may want to wait 24 hours before it dries entirely.

There may be a problem with dampness build-up if you live in an older home. Paint will quickly crack when you have condensation or perhaps leaks. You will see this often in the bathroom, where mold and mildew may also grow. While this is normally a bathroom concern, it can happen in other parts of the house. Water leaks could cause paint cracks as well as shrubs that are too close to the house. If the paint is cracking because of dampness, then you need to find a different option. If it's inside the house, you will need to create a solution that is one part bleach and three parts water to remove the paint and kill the mildew. If it is on the outside of the home, merely use the solution that comes with a pressure washer.

Additionally, you will need to repaint when the paint on your home is fading. This occurs usually outside the home where there is direct sunlight almost for the whole day. To prevent this problem, steer clear of bright colors, or bold ones, like red. If you'd like colors that stand out, try ones that are generally golden or with a ruddy tone.

Invariably you should try to keep your home seeming fresh and new. Do your best to always keep the paint on your house looking vibrant and stop any leaks from damaging your paint job.
