How To Improve Self Defense In Your Home

By Byron Jonas

A good number of people do not take the issue of home invasions seriously. Many will think that simply because they are in areas of low crime statistics, they are immune from attacks. If you are in this bracket of people, think twice and devise methods of beefing up self defense in your home.

Owning a gun is the most probable thing which will jump into the minds of many when they think of improving their home security. However, a good number of people have never used a gun outside the comfort of the shooting training range. This could not be an effective weapon to many especially those who get frightened easily.

Designating a room where everyone can go in-case of an attack is a wise idea. All members of the family should go to this room at once and stay put. The room should also have some tools that could help you out, for instance, a telephone that can be used to alert the police. It should be strategically placed to give you room to see the invaders without them seeing you. It will also help you identify whoever comes in, in-case it is the police.

It might take a long time for help to arrive. Even if it seems peaceful and that the burglars have left, stay put in the room until the police arrive. There is always a high probability that the prowlers could be lying in wait, to pounce on you immediately you get out of your hiding area.

Developing a code word would be a valuable idea to any family. This will help everyone know what to do and when. You should also ensure you use a simple word which you will not forget even when extremely frightened.

Installing monitored burglar alarms at places where housebreakers would not spot and destroy them would be a wise decision. Ensure too that it has panic buttons at many places all through the premises, just in-case you need to relocate from one spot to another.

If an escape route exists in the house, make a point of keeping it clear at all times. It might be a strategic upstairs window, which means you should have a knotted rope in the room for the purpose of swift escape. Having a rope ladder handy all the time would also be a wise thing.

Watch groups exist in different residential areas. Being a member of one is a wise decision for improving self defense in your home. Forming one where it is not present is advisable, and you should ensure it gets the backing of the local police.
