The Hidden Costs of Dog Ownership

By Dirk Gruenberg

Everyone know that dogs brighten up your life and bring so much more happiness and joy into it than anyone who does not own a dog would ever be able to imagine. Their loyalty, companionship, and love are simply and truly priceless.

But the adorable big eyes, the wagging tail, the happy face of a dog, it all does not come for free. In contrast, getting a dog is quite a financial undertaking.

Of course, if you love your dog as much as I love mine, you will agree with me that one cannot put a price tag on all that love and happiness that dogs bring into our lives.

But you still need to be realistic: Dog lovers must first prepare themselves for the price tag attached to the dog he is going to bring home which can help in budgeting appropriately for his new friend.

The first thing you need to do is to buy a dog, for which you are expected to spend several hundred dollars to buy a pet, whether you buy it from a pet store or from a breeder. Even if you adopt a dog the cost of caring for it will still exist.

Generally, whenever pet owners are asked the cost of their pets, they just calculate the price of food and say they can afford the dog but in reality they forget other aspects in raising a dog like the most important- medical care.

Some also like to spend more on optional expenses like toys, treats, beds, cages, obedience training sessions, grooming and other extras which can be cut down to be in budget. But pet food is one where you cannot do that.

Because even animals can get sick, medical care is another expense that you will need to be able to meet.

The responsible dog lover can understand this and should be willing to accept these financial consequences in case of prolonged illness and emergencies.
