Generator Repair Basics

By Maria Sandstone

Generators are pieces of machinery that create electricity. This creates independence from the municipal power grid. Depending on the size and type of generator the amount of energy produced can be tremendous. However, like all pieces of machinery they are prone to breakage and repairs are inevitable. Generator issues can be difficult to handle, but you must be able to keep your generator running and functional.

There are many different working pieces in a generator and like any other piece of machinery these pieces are subject to stress and require ongoing maintenance and repair which has to be conducted by a trained and licensed electrician familiar with your specific generator. By being familiar with the basic parts of the generator you can be more familiar with the situation when you work with your electrician.

Most generators used in commercial enterprises are alternators, which have both a rotating winding and a stationary winding. The rotating winding is exciting by direct current, while the stationary winding produces alternating current.

Because of the greater friction created by the rotating winder, this is the part that most commonly requires some sort of repair. The winding can become worn or broken and it may require complete replacement in some cases. There are several fittings and connections that are part of the winding and they should be checked regularly and might need to be repaired or replaced.

The other winding, the stationary one, will also require regular maintenance and repair as it could develop stress fractures or breaks that could cause you to have to replace the entire part. The connectors and other pieces that connect the piece to the rest of the alternator are more prone to breakage and damage and will likely need replacing frequently. The two windings constitute the bulk of the generator and will cause most of your repairs.

Another common repair that is required for an alternating generator is a replacement of the brushes on the alternator. The brushes convey the current from the winding. There are some alternators that do not use brushes and those alternators carry current along the motor shaft.

Generator repair is, at its heart, a search for the ideal repairman. You want someone who is experienced and licensed and familiar with the kind of generator you own. You can then extend the repairman's scope to include maintenance and other similar actions that can extend the life of your generator and minimize repairs.

Generator repair is an essential part of owning and operating a generator and the best thing you can do is find a repairman you trust who can perform repairs and also do maintenance as needed. With regular maintenance and repair, you can extend the life and performance of your generator.
