Each and Every Parent Needs These Skills

By Pinky Arnisola

Many parents assume that everything they have to know about raising their kids is self evident, but sometimes it's necessary to pick up some new skills. This is because no one is perfect, and there are bound to be one or two weaknesses or areas of improvement you could work on. The world changes every moment; for example, most of today's generations of parents didn't grow up online but they still have to carefully monitor their kids use of the internet to see how the online world affects them. In this article we are going to discuss some important parenting skills that every parent needs to have.

Everybody has heard that praising kids is a good idea but you need to be aware of how you go about this. Some parents simply don't praise their kids enough but others do so in a way that is just not helpful. To use one example, the best thing is to praise kids for something they've worked hard at more so than something they do not have any control over. If a child is naturally intelligent, attractive or athletic, for example, to constantly praise them for this may be counterproductive and cause vanity or arrogance. On the other hand, praising a child for working hard at sports or plays or homework is just encouragement to continue doing their best.

One skill that's important for parents to develop is becoming interested in what their kids are interested in.

Lots of parents have problems when it comes to saying no to things their children want. Being able to say "no" in way that's firm but not unkind is a skill that you need for your own well being, as well as that of your child. Children should be told, as much as possible, why it's not a good idea for them to have everything they want. If they eat too much ice cream, to use one example, they might get sick in the moment and, over time, gain too much weight. Even when your kids don't care about your explanation or seem to not understand it, it is still sinking in somewhere in their brains so it is definitely worth repeating. In cases like these, especially if your children keep asking, it is important to be as persistent and patient as possible.

The tips here are some of the most important skills you will need if you want to be a good parent to your kids. Every parent has areas that are challenging, and this will vary based on the personality of your child as well as your own. Try to remember that parenting is a process that changes a little bit each day as your child grows up but keeping some definite boundaries in place can be helpful both for you and your child.
