The Difference Between Religion And Spirituality

By Jayde Johannsen

There is some confusion when it comes to understanding the difference between religion and spirituality. There is often a lot of debate about the subject, as there seems to be a lot of people that do not understand that their is a difference between the two. But the distinction is really easy to explain.

A spiritual individual lives their live in a certain way that acknowledges the existence of a higher being and will often look to that existence as a source of strength and guidance. But these individuals may not be religious. Those that do ascribe to a religion, are formalized through a doctrine and worship a higher being in a certain way.

These terms are always used by people interchangeably, although they have two very different meanings. There are plenty of spiritual people that do not follow any type of religious at all. And there are also many religious people that also consider themselves to be very spiritual. Spirituality is an awareness of a higher being and the existence of a non-physical world. But the two are really mutually exclusive. Those that are religious, hold to certain doctrines that have been taught through formal religious training.

Religious doctrines are taught rather than being an innate feeling. Individuals are born with their own sense of spirituality but individuals are not born with religion. Religious beliefs are considered to be a vehicle that is used to practice spirituality. It is considered to be what an individual believes based on a particular doctrine.

Oftentimes, the terms spiritual and religious are intertwined and used in the same way. But they are two different concepts. A religious person is normally associated with a specific doctrine and will typically attend a church. This doctrine can be from any type of formalized religious belief. But a spiritual person does not have to share the same level of indoctrinated commitment.

But there are many people that consider themselves to be spiritual but never go to church. They have their own personal relationship with who they believe God to be. There are many different ways these beliefs are expressed without the use of religion. Individuals function according to a spiritual awareness that guides their daily lives. This is an experience that is unique to each person. Both spiritual and religious experiences are very personal to the individual. They both affect a person's life in different ways.

The difference between religion and spirituality can be a bit confusing to understand but it becomes easier once you realize one is inward and the other is outward. Religious beliefs are more formalized whereas spiritual experiences are more of a feeling that is acted upon. And it is very possible to be both, which many people believe that they are.
